Lau diffraction doesn’t require the radiation to be reflected specularly.īragg and Laue diffractions are used as crystallographic techniques and laws to describe different crystal systems. Laue diffraction doesn’t require particular planes or spacing.īragg diffraction requires specular reflection of the incident radiation. Lambda (λ) is also a variable, and it is the wavelength of the incident X ray beam. It is also called lattice spacing and is a variable parameter (varies based on the type of crystal). Here, d is the distance between atomic layers of the crystal lattice. The angle observed here is known as theta (θ). When X rays are scattered from a crystal lattice, the Bragg’s law describes the angles at which the X ray beams are reflected by cleavage faces of the crystal. For example, a borrower holds a mortgage at a 5% interest rate with $200,000 and 20 years remaining. Refinance to a shorter termĪnother option involves refinancing, or taking out a new mortgage to pay off an old loan. In such cases, borrowers can allocate a certain amount from each paycheck for the mortgage repayment. The biweekly payments option is suitable for those that receive a paycheck every two weeks. Thus, borrowers make the equivalent of 13 full monthly payments at year's end, or one extra month of payments every year. With 52 weeks in a year, this approach results in 26 half payments. This entails paying half of the regular mortgage payment every two weeks. Biweekly PaymentsĪnother strategy for paying off the mortgage earlier involves biweekly payments. For the same $200,000, 30-year, 5% interest loan, extra monthly payments of $6 will pay off the loan four payments earlier, saving $2,796 in interest. For example, a one-time additional payment of $1,000 towards a $200,000, 30-year loan at 5% interest can pay off the loan four months earlier, saving $3,420 in interest. Borrowers can make these payments on a one-time basis or over a specified period, such as monthly or annually.Įxtra payments can possibly lower overall interest costs dramatically. The Mortgage Payoff Calculator and the accompanying Amortization Table illustrate this precisely. Thus, with each successive payment, the portion allocated to interest falls while the amount of principal paid rises. However, as the outstanding principal declines, interest costs will subsequently fall. Since the outstanding balance on the total principal requires higher interest charges, a more significant part of the payment will go toward interest at first. A typical amortization schedule of a mortgage loan will contain both interest and principal.Įach payment will cover the interest first, with the remaining portion allocated to the principal. This interest charge is typically a percentage of the outstanding principal. The principal is the amount borrowed, while the interest is the lender's charge to borrow the money. If a series does not fit into any other category such as Shonen or Shojo, then it will be put under seinen. Just like shonen manga, seinen manga features action and violence, but with a more serious or darker tone, as well as adult content such as sexual situations, graphic violence, or foul language. Examples of shojo manga (click on any cover for the NYPL catalog link)Ĭommon themes: Action, Violence, Sex, Adult themes With her fellow Sailor Senshi (Sailor Scouts), she must defend the Earth from the forces of evil in the name of the Moon. It follows Usagi Tsukino, a normal 14-year-old girl who finds out she is the reincarnated form of the legendary Sailor Moon, a defender of love and justice from the now-destroyed Moon Kingdom. Sailor Moon,is probably the most famous example of a shojo series. Naoko Takeuchi's Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, a.k.a. This is completely different from, say, CLAMP's Cardcaptor Sakura, which follows a ten-year-old girl with magical powers who has to save her city from monsters. For instance, Ai Yazawa's Nanais technically classified as a shojo series because it was published in a shojo magazine, although the story follows two young women as they navigate their way through personal relationships, sexual relationships, and drug use on their way to fulfill their dreams. Their narratives vary as much as any other genre. This is not to say that shojo manga consists only of cute, fun stories. Like shonen manga, shojo manga usually feature the coming-of-age story of a young protagonist. You can usually identify shojo covers by their use of pretty pinks, flowers, or other cutesy images. The focus here is less on action and more on drama, emotion, and, almost always, idealized romance. If you are looking for more information on manga genres and subgenres, then check out: Beginner's Guide to Manga 3: Genres and Subgenres.ĭon't forget to check out our handy Manga for Middle-Schoolers guide for further recommendations!Ĭommon Themes: Romance, Drama, Coming of Age We would need an entirely different blog post to cover the gargantuan number of manga genres and sub-genres that exist so, for now, we will simply cover the types of audiences to which manga are marketed. ![]() That is simply how they are marketed. If you were looking for manga for a young boy who likes fantasy or mystery, you would search for "shonen (boy) fantasy" or "shonen mystery" manga. However, this does not mean a boy cannot enjoy the series. Manga is chiefly categorized by audience first, then genre. For example, CLAMP's Cardcaptor Sakura is a shojo (young girls) "magical girl" (sub-genre) manga. Whether you like high school romantic comedies or high-fantasy epics, there is a manga for you. The most important thing to remember about manga is there is something for everyone. This might be easier for small series, such as Naoko Takeuchi's Sailor Moon, which only has about 12 volumes, versus longer-running series such as Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball, which has 42 volumes. This is something to keep in mind when starting a new series as it is imperative you read the volumes in the correct order. Most manga series are long-running and can span multiple volumes. If a series is popular enough, its chapters are then collected and published into volumes called tankōbon volumes, which usually feature a few chapters of the overall story. In Japan, manga are typically released on a monthly or a weekly chapter-by-chapter basis through manga magazines such as Weekly Shōnen Jump, (which has been in circulation since 1968). This can take some getting used to if you have only ever read English publications, but you will hardly notice once you’ve practiced enough. Japanese manga is read right-to-left rather than left-to-right, which is the norm for English language publications. Full-color prints are often only used for special releases. Unlike American comic books, which are usually printed in full color, Japanese manga are almost always published in black and white. Manga is an umbrella term for a wide variety of comic books and graphic novels originally produced and published in Japan. ![]() Your body is forcibly rocked after an automobile accident, resulting in damages and injuries. What happens to your body during a car accident? The reason for this is that even a brick wall will give in the event of a collision.ĥ. Driving at a high rate makes it more difficult for the driver to keep control of the car.Ĥ. What is the formula for calculating the impact force of a car?ĭivide the kinetic energy by the distance to get the impact force.Īt speeds of 70 mph or more, a fatal car accident is virtually unavoidable. Multiplying the mass of the crashing object by its deceleration gets the amount of force involved in a collision.Ģ. What is the formula for calculating crash force? This is why they can't be too long-lasting.ġ. Cars are built to collapse on impact, lengthening the duration of contact and minimising the force of impact. Falling on the ground takes less time than falling on a trampoline since the moment of collision is longer because it is a flat surface. Consider jumping from a certain height directly onto the ground in one case and onto a trampoline in the other. The average impact force will be reduced if the collision period is extended. The formula above is a subset of the impulse and momentum formula. If we construct the formula using the time of collision t rather than the distance d, we can better grasp the impact force. The average impact force is reduced by increasing the distance travelled during the encounter. d = distance travelled at the time of the collision. ![]() These different safety features decrease the rate of change of momentum, which decreases the force of the collision on any people within the car.Impact Force can be calculated using the formula F = m x v² / (2 x d) Crumple zones refer to the areas of a car that are designed to deform or crumple on impact. Car safety features such as seatbelts, airbags and crumple zones all work to change the shape of the car, which increases the time taken for the collision. The force of the collision is equal to the rate of change of momentum. Car safety featuresĭuring a collision there is a change in momentum. Momentum is a vector and they are in opposite directions so add up to zero. These extra bits of momentum add nothing to the whole system. So in a collision the two objects each gain the same momentum but in opposite directions. The change in momentum is given by the force multiplied by the time it acts for. This means that the objects will each have the same size force acting for the same amount of time. When objects collide, they will exert equal and opposite forces on each other all the time they are in contact. The equation shows that the force involved is equal to the rate of change of momentum.
![]() Here, with the help of a narrator, over the course of a few minutes we learned the rudimentary controls used in the game to dive, raise, turn, and control our submarine. ![]() The game will provide a training scenario called Basic Sub Ops. These ICBM-equipped sub classes (namely the US Ohio and the Russian Delta and Typhoon) are referred to as "boomers," and hunting them will be a recurring theme as you progress through Sub Command. Hunter/killer subs don't carry the resources to launch a large-scale nuclear attack on a foreign country that duty falls to a specific type of sub that is outfitted with full-sized long-range ICBMs. The three classes available to use in the game are the US Los Angeles, the US Seawolf, and the Russian Akula, which are all hunter/killer sub classes, meaning their primary role is to hunt down and kill other submarines. It's a great tool to refer to for both new recruits and hardened seagoing veterans before heading out to sea for a specific mission.Īfter familiarizing ourselves with the opponents we'd likely see in the game, we proceeded to move to the training area, to partake in three staged scenarios designed to get us up to speed regarding the handling of each of the game's three sub classes. More than 17 countries with 26 submarines and 92 weapons are profiled in the game's USNI database, along with corresponding pictures of what the platform or weapon looks like both in the game and in real life. And you'd be right on, because the first thing you are greeted with after loading the game is the option to look around and see what real-world threats you'll be up against in the game's environment via a slick database propelled by info from the United States Naval Institute. Recently GameSpot had the opportunity to get some hands-on time with the latest alpha build of Sub Command, and now that we're back on dry land, we can report on the game's progress and specifics.īeing that the Sonalyst team includes more than a dozen former US Naval personnel (both enlisted and officer ranks), you'd expect that Sub Command's main menu after boot-up would feature an option to peruse a large amount of reference data and information regarding the world's seagoing forces. Developed by Sonalysts, a military contractor that previously produced Jane's 688(I) Hunter/Killer in 1997, Sub Command promises to bring desk-driving civilians closer to the real world of directing a modern attack sub than previous genre attempts have done. In Electronic Arts' upcoming submarine simulation, Sub Command, you will have the opportunity to take on the role of captain in one of three modern hunter/killer submarines in two independent campaigns across the world's oceans. You become a captain of a hunter/killer submarine. Since the flight time for the submerged missiles is so short compared to the flight time for ICBMs that are based on land, an enemy submarine's nuclear payload requires a special defensive deterrent that counters it on its own turf: a "hunter/killer" submarine, which is designed specifically to hunt other submarines. This doomsday scenario has been a real-world threat for more than 30 years now, as the development and production of ICBM-equipped submarines has made it a reality that continues to this day. Map screens indicate the position of other ships in the game. ![]() The deadly missiles are located deep underwater, are mobile, and can be launched from positions so close to shore that the flight time from ignition to impact can be less than ten minutes. Each of these missiles carries three to ten nuclear warheads, which means that a grand total of anywhere from 450 to 1,000 city-leveling nuclear warheads are ready to fly over our heads at a moment's notice. At any given moment in time, there are nearly 150 nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles pointed at targets within the Western Hemisphere. ![]() Todoist allows users to mesh their own approaches to productivity with well-known methodologies like GTD, The Agile Way, and even Kanban to a certain degree (largely through the use of colour). I can also flag tasks with “priority levels,” allowing me to mark off my Three Big Rocks for the next day if I want. I can actually use them in a number of ways, and because I can apply multiple labels to a task I can really hone in on what I want to do at any given time. Todoist’s labelling is also helpful, in that I can decide whether I want to use “labels” as contexts or not. (Note: I’ll be sharing how I use Todoist with my virtual assistant more extensively in a future blog post.) This process will help me offload some tasks I’ve got in my Inbox to my VA seamlessly. So I have a project that I use for things I work with my VA and as things come in I can actually drag them to that project from other projects that I’m not sharing. Now I know I can do this with Asana as well, but I actually prefer the ability to keep my own stuff separate from larger team stuff…and Asana is where I keep my larger team stuff. For the purposes of my virtual assistant experiment, I know I can create a project in Todoist and share items in there with my VA. There are a few areas where I find Todoist’s flexibility to be another major selling point.įor one, Todoist also offers something that OmniFocus doesn’t: team task management. Todoist Premium offers a ton of features (productivity tracking, enhanced label system, project templates, file attachments, etc.) for what amounts to less than $2.50 per month. If you’ve been using a task management solution for a while and need to be able to customize things to better suit your approach to productivity, then you’ll definitely want to “go premium” with Todoist. Todoist Premium is only $29 per year and you get a lot for your money. The free version of Todoist will suffice for people who are looking to add a task management component to their digital workflow for the first time, or for those who don’t need a lot of bells and whistles and yet still want a pleasing user experience. I’d suggest that Todoist strikes a nice balance in this space, offering a limited free version that will work for many people, and a more robust premium version that scales up exceptionally well. There are hundreds of free applications like this out there, but you get what you pay for in many cases. But I know that I am in the minority when it comes to paying for applications that many consider to be simply a “to do list” and nothing more. I’ve dropped lots of cash on different applications that I’ve abandoned long ago. Longtime readers know that I don’t have a problem paying for products and services. And with the Todoist chrome extension, you can access your Todoist setup on any site. With integration for three major email clients, you have the ability to have your task manager at the ready while processing your email inbox. No matter what device you’re using, you can access Todoist (as long as you are able to connect with the Internet upon launch). Todoist even integrates with Gmail, Outlook, and Postbox. Todoist, on the other hand, has a slew of platforms it is developed for: That limits the accessibility of the app, and that is less than ideal. They can’t actually work with OmniFocus on the go, unless they’re also carrying an iPad or even a Mac notebook with them. But the fact of the matter is more people are using Android these days, and the only real solution that Android users have to get their stuff to OmniFocus are third party apps like Send-2-OmniFocus and OmniFocus Mailer. Unfortunately OmniFocus doesn’t provide that unless you are using iOS or Mac devices. ![]() Ultimately, most people want a task management solution that they can use anytime, anywhere.
